Why write backwards?

Missy Briggs

Friends and strangers ask me all the time, "Why do you write backwards?"

If you take a look through my Instagram feed, you'll see videos of me, writing backwards. It's kind of become my thing.

I write backwards for several reasons.

1. It's not that hard. I know how to make my letterforms stroke by stroke. If you know the ins and outs of all the letters, you can write them forwards or backwards. If you take the time to learn letters stroke by stroke, you can replicate them in either direction. Pinky promise. Then you can move on and make variations. And modern calligraphy is all about personal style! Writing backwards is a demonstration that I know what the heck I'm doing!

2. When I make videos for Instagram or YouTube, it's easier for you to see me. When I write forwards, I have to sit the camera to my right to give you a good view without my left hand obstructing it. Just a lefty thing!

3. It's a pretty cool trick. It does take a bit of practice to get the spacing down. Not to mention, you have to be able to spell backwards.

How about forwards? Let's get this going together. You can learn to letter too! Feel free to reach out here or on Instagram. I love helping out my lefty (and righty!) friends.

I can totally teach a righty. I might secretly be a righty! Check out this video...
