Sketch The Met
A Daily Drawing Practice with The Metropolitan Museum of Art
I started drawing every day in September 2023. At first it was just for me. Building a habit, learning to see.
In May 2025, I pointed that habit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art's open-access collection. Five thousand years of human making, free to study, reproduce, and expand upon. A custom app serves one artwork at random each day. Byzantine mosaics. Japanese screens. Persian manuscripts. Works on view and works catalogued away in storage. I draw it. Some days that means an hour. Some days a few minutes and a rough line. The practice doesn't distinguish.
This project is both small and large. Like an art restoration, I'm slowly tapping into original intent. Unlike restoration, there is no completion in sight. Are the works finished or just drafts? And what are mine? Questions unanswered and a daily meditation.
